The last few weeks I have been lucky enough to go to the Nike+ Run Club. There are many of these clubs worldwide. You can easily download the Nike+ run club app and look under the events tab and select your cit. Check to see if there's an event and community run coming up in a city near you! I would reserve a a spot if you live in a big major city because i now some of the run clubs get pretty big and space is limited.
I live in Oregon which is the home of the Nike world Headquarters. Every other Tuesday evening at 6:30pm on the Nike Headquarters track. Also, known as the Michael Johnson Track. The campus is usually closed to visitors or non-employees, but these evenings the campus is open to anyone who wants to join their Nike speed runs.
I always recommend coming a few minutes early so you can check-in and get setup before the run begins. I Once you arrive you will check in with a pacer who will get you registered and have you sign a waiver. They have people working there to take your stuff and store it while you run. You can try one of their latest trial shoes for the run. Right Now, their trailing the Lunar EpicLow 2. You next will get a pace band depending on your mile time. This is to help you get grouped up in the run.
The running coach for the Nike speed runs in Portland is Julia. She's amazing! She usually will lead a quick warm up before you start running. Everyone will run a short lap around the campus at a jog to get warmed up, arriving back to the track to do some dynamic warm-ups. Usually consisting of drills such as; a skips, B skips, flute activators and short runs.
Then You will get paired up with your pace group. It is lead by one or two pacers. One at the front and one at the back to help anyone who might be falling behind. Don't worry you can easily switch to another group if your feeling a bit faster than you thought or need to go a little slower than you thought. Coach Julia is always around encouraging and providing advice to help out. You will then begin going through the workout that Coach Julia planned for the evening.
Last week we did 3 x 600M sprints at mile pace time with 90 secs rest in between. 3 x 400M sprints at mile pace time with 60 secs rest. Then 4 x 200M sprints at mile pace time with 30 seconds rest between each.
After there is water, snacks and towels available to recover. People usually hang out and chat. The community is great and so positive and encouraging. The pacers are friendly and willing to help you. There's also an awesome photographer Jordan who you will see running around taking photos which will be sent to you in an email a couple days later. These photos are free to you and it is highly encouraged that you share them on social media.
I highly recommend if you can join one of your local Nike+ Run Clubs that you do. If you can I would also suggest try joining one of the Nike Headquarters Nike+ speed runs.
