The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a fairly new lighthouse on the coast. It was created to replace the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. This lighthouse replaced the bay lighthouse after three years. The bay lighthouse was discovered to not give enough warning to the rocky coastline. The Yaquina Head lighthouse is 3 miles up the coast from the bay lighthouse.
Just down from the Yaquina Head lighthouse is cobblestone beach. It is a beach that is completely made from smooth cobblestone. It was very close to the ocean and the waves come in and collect in the tide pools. The mussels are along the rocks.
This was a particularly fantastic time to go to the lighthouse and the beach because humpback whales were feeding close into the coast. You could see the whales coming up for air every few minutes.
