Today I got the opportunity to go to the Portland Art Museum. Right now they are featuring an amazing exhibit on local Portland Film studio Laikai. This stop motion animation studio is responsible for making award winning films such as; Coraline, Paranormal, the Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings.
The amount of time, effort and engineering that goes into every film project is astounding. It takes teams of people to create the puppets, the animation, the sculpting on the puppets, the outfits, the filming and the creativity that it takes to bring a story to life. It takes a team of 70 people to create the different facial expressions used in the movies. Laika uses 3D printing techniques to create multiple faces to achieve the different expressions necessary to convey the story.
I rather enjoyed seeing the scale of some of the big setts, the creatures, the puppets and how all the pieces fit together to create a visually stunning film. The innovation that comes out of the studio is nothing short of amazing.
Eggs Puppet - Box Trolls
I would highly recommend going to see the exhibit that is open till late May. If you haven't had the chance to see one of Laika's films I would highly recommend that as well.
